Originally known as Jumpman, Mario is the hero of the story. Donning his trademark red overalls and cap, Mario must jump and climb his way to the top to save Pauline from Donkey Kong’s grasp.

The damsel in distress, Pauline, is waiting for Mario to rescue her. She appears at the top of each level, calling for help as Donkey Kong taunts from above.

The Levels

Welcome to the first level of Donkey Kong! Here, Mario must navigate a construction site filled with rolling barrels and broken ladders. Jump over the barrels or smash them with a hammer to make your way up to Pauline.

50m

Things get trickier in the second level, where Mario faces conveyor belts, falling cement tubs, and even more barrels. Keep your wits about you and watch out for those sneaky fireballs!

You’ve made it to the third level, where Donkey Kong ups the ante by hurling springs at Mario. Climb the ladders, avoid the bouncing obstacles, and be careful not to fall!

History of StarTropics

Release date and platform

StarTropics was released in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), making it one of the later titles in the console’s life. The game even made an appearance in Nintendo Power magazine, helping to create buzz around its release.

Developers

The game was developed by Nintendo’s Integrated Research & Development division (IRD), the same team responsible for the development of the NES hardware and other console games.

Game’s inspiration

The game’s tropical setting and adventure theme were a unique combination for the time, with inspiration drawn from the likes of The Legend of Zelda and Indiana Jones. The tropical islands and interactive traffic within the game’s environment made it stand out from other titles of its era.

StarTropics Storyline

Protagonist

In StarTropics, players assume the role of Mike Jones, a teenager from Seattle with a knack for adventure. Mike is not your typical hero; he’s an ordinary guy thrust into extraordinary circumstances, armed with only his trusty island Yo-Yo.

Main objective

The game’s story begins when Mike receives a physical letter from his archaeologist uncle, Dr. Jones (also known as Uncle Steve), who invites him to visit his laboratory on the tropical C-Island. However, upon arrival, Mike discovers that his uncle has mysteriously disappeared. Mike sets out on a quest to find his missing uncle and uncover the secrets of the nearby islands.

Gameplay

Controls and mechanics

StarTropics features a top-down perspective similar to The Legend of Zelda, with players controlling Mike using the NES controller’s directional pad and two action buttons. The controls are simple but responsive, allowing for a smooth gaming experience.

Island exploration

As players traverse the various tropical islands, they’ll encounter friendly villagers and exotic locations filled with secrets. Players can interact with the environment and NPCs, like the village chief and the village elder, gathering information and items necessary for their quest.

Dungeon crawling

The game also includes dungeons filled with enemies, traps, and puzzles. Mike must use his wits, reflexes, and an array of weapons and items, like baseball bats and special weapons, to navigate these treacherous areas.

Puzzles and riddles

In addition to combat and exploration, StarTropics is known for its challenging puzzles and riddles, often involving tiles and secret passages. One particularly memorable puzzle involves a letter in water, showcasing the game’s unique design and willingness to push the envelope. You’ll have to play it; we won’t spoil the surprise!

Graphics and Sound

Visuals

StarTropics sports colorful and detailed graphics that bring the game’s tropical setting to life. The green tiles and other visual elements create a vibrant world that still holds up today, evoking a sense of nostalgia for those who experienced the game in its prime.

Music and sound effects

The game’s soundtrack is filled with catchy tunes that perfectly complement the tropical setting. From the festive village themes to the eerie dungeon tracks, the music in StarTropics is sure to get stuck in your head. The sound effects, though limited by the NES hardware, add to the overall atmosphere and charm of the game.

Legacy and Impact

Reception

Upon its release, StarTropics received positive reviews for its engaging gameplay, challenging puzzles, and vibrant visuals. However, it didn’t achieve the same level of success as some other Nintendo franchises, which means it ended up becoming a cult classic among console games.

Sequel

A sequel, Zoda’s Revenge: StarTropics II, was released in 1994 for the NES. While it maintained the core gameplay elements and charm of the original, it didn’t garner the same level of attention, likely due to the focus shifting to the newer Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

Influence on future games

Despite its niche status, StarTropics has left an indelible mark on the gaming industry. The game’s blend of exploration, puzzle-solving, and action can be seen in many modern titles, and its tropical setting has inspired countless other games over the years. It’s safe to say that StarTropics represents a natural evolution in video game design.

In conclusion, StarTropics is a gem from the NES era that deserves recognition for its unique blend of gameplay elements, captivating story, and charming presentation. Though it may not be as well-known as some other Nintendo franchises, it remains a beloved classic in the hearts of those who have experienced its tropical adventure. So, if you’re looking for a retro game to add to your collection or just want to relive the excitement of uncovering island secrets, give StarTropics a try! Dr. Mario Review – Pill Puzzler of The 90s

Remember those times when the doctor prescribed fun instead of medicine? Well, I do! And Dr. Mario was that prescription 8-bit game I needed. In this article, I’ll take you on a journey through this iconic game and help you relive the magic of Dr. Mario, the Nintendo classic puzzle game that still captivates players even today. So let’s dive right into our Dr. Mario review, shall we?

Dr. Mario creating in his lab
Dr. Mario At Work – An RGN Imagining

Gameplay Mechanics

Basic Mechanics

Unlike the first Mario NES game, Dr. Mario’s core gameplay is centered around eliminating pesky, nasty viruses with multicolored pills, or as I like to call them, “vitamins.” The objective is to match four or more like-colored vitamins (pills and viruses) in a row, either horizontally or vertically, to clear them off the board. Simple enough, right? But don’t be fooled! The game gets more challenging as you progress through the stages.

Clearing Viruses

When you successfully match the pill colors, the virus is eliminated, and the remaining pill fragments dropdown. The game continues until you’ve cleared all the viruses or the screen fills up with piles of vitamins. Talk about a challenging day at the doctor’s office in a lab coat!

Combos and Chains

As you master the familiar gameplay, you’ll discover the joy of creating combos and chains, which result in higher scores and faster clears. Combos happen when you clear multiple groups of viruses with a single pill drop, while chains occur when a falling pill fragment clears another group of viruses. The satisfaction of executing these advanced moves is truly addictive!

Graphics and Sound

Visuals

Dr. Mario’s visuals are simple yet charming, with vivid colors and cute, expressive viruses. The game’s 8-bit graphics may not be groundbreaking, but they hold a special place in the hearts of retro gaming enthusiasts.

Audio

The game’s iconic background music, featuring the catchy “Fever” and “Chill” themes, is nothing short of a masterpiece. The tunes are so contagious that you might find yourself humming them long after you’ve put the controller down. Talk about an earworm!

Game Modes

Single Player

Dr. Mario’s single-player mode offers endless hours of pill-popping fun as you progress through increasingly challenging levels, from normal stages to the hardest stages. You can even choose your starting level and speed in the game settings, allowing you to tailor the experience to your skill level.

Multiplayer

The game’s multiplayer mode is where the real fun lies. Going head-to-head against a friend adds a competitive edge that’ll keep you coming back for more. With each player trying to outlast the other, the frantic action is sure to evoke both laughter and frustration.

Power-ups and Abilities

Dr. Mario’s Abilities

While Dr. Mario doesn’t have any special abilities per se, his ability to rotate pills and strategically place them is crucial to clearing the board. Mastering the controls is the key to becoming a pill-popping pro.

Other Characters

In some later versions of Dr. Mario, other characters like Dr. Luigi and Dr. Peach also make appearances, each with their own unique abilities. It’s always fun to see how these characters put their own spin on the classic gameplay.

Level Design and Difficulty

Level Progression

Dr. Mario’s level progression is designed to ease you into the gameplay. Early levels have fewer viruses and slower pill drops, allowing you to get a feel for the mechanics. But don’t get too comfortable—later levels ramp up the challenge with more viruses and faster-paced gameplay.

Difficulty Curve

The game’s difficulty curve is well-balanced, with each level providing a fair but challenging increase in difficulty. This keeps the gameplay engaging without becoming too frustrating. However, be prepared for some intense nail-biting moments as you reach the core stages and the most brutal stages of the game!

Nostalgia Factor

There’s no denying that Dr. Mario’s nostalgia factor is off the charts. Whether you played it on the NES, Game Boy, or any of its numerous re-releases, it’s hard not to reminisce about the good old days of pixelated pill-popping in this classic puzzle game.

Comparing to Other Puzzlers

Tetris

Arguably the most famous block puzzle game of all time, Tetris is known for its addictive gameplay and iconic music. While Dr. Mario may not quite reach the same level of fame, it holds its own as a unique and captivating color-matching puzzle game.

Puyo Puyo

Puyo Puyo, with its similar color-matching gameplay, is another worthy competitor. Although it’s more focused on chaining combos, fans of Dr. Mario will likely enjoy the challenge it presents.

Panel de Pon

Panel de Pon, also known as Tetris Attack or Puzzle League, swaps pills for tiles and offers a different kind of matching challenge. While the gameplay is distinct, it shares the same addictive quality that makes Dr. Mario a classic.

Pros and Cons

Pros

– Simple yet addictive puzzle game

– Iconic background music

– Strong nostalgia factor

– Engaging multiplayer mode

– Additional modes in later versions

Cons

– Limited game modes in the original release

– Graphics may feel dated to some

Dr. Mario remains a beloved classic game that has stood the test of time. With its addictive puzzle gameplay, charming visuals, and iconic soundtrack, it’s a fun game that continues to captivate players, both old and new. Overall, Silent Hill 2 and 3 HD Collection are some of the best horror games for the PS4. They’ve influenced the genre and continue to be a favorite among horror fans. If you’re looking for a truly immersive and terrifying horror game experience, these classics are a must-play.

Dead Space

A science fiction survival horror game originally released in 2008.

As a horror game enthusiast, I can confidently say that Dead Space is a true classic. Released in 2008, the game takes you on a journey through space as Isaac Clarke, an engineer who finds himself in the middle of a horrifying alien invasion. What sets Dead Space apart is its unique dismemberment mechanics, which adds a whole new level of strategy to the gameplay.

But what really makes the game stand out is the terrifying atmosphere. From the haunting sound effects to the grotesque creatures, Dead Space will keep you on edge the entire time you’re playing. And the sequels that followed are just as impressive.

Dead Space is one of those games that has had a lasting impact on the horror genre. It’s a must-play for anyone who loves a good scare and is looking for a challenging and immersive gaming experience. If you haven’t played it yet, do yourself a favor and give it a try. You won’t regret it.

Siren: Blood Curse

A reimagining of the PlayStation 2 retro classic, Siren.

Oh man, Siren: Blood Curse is an absolute gem in the horror genre! Developed by Sony’s Japan Studio for PS3, this episodic survival horror game hooked me right from the start.

Set in the creepy Japanese village of Hanuda, you follow an American TV crew as they uncover the village’s terrifying secrets and try to survive against the nightmarish Shibito.

The “sightjacking” mechanic is insanely cool – you get to see through the eyes of your enemies, helping you outsmart those horrifying reanimated corpses. The game’s blend of stealth, combat, and puzzles kept me on my toes and genuinely scared.

I can’t recommend Siren: Blood Curse enough; the chilling atmosphere and heart-pounding experience make it a must-play for any horror fan!

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

With no weapons, you’ll have to rely on your wits and resourcefulness to stay alive and uncover the terrifying secrets lurking within the castle’s shadowy halls.

Amnesia’s haunting atmosphere, creepy sound design, and clever use of psychological horror create a genuinely unsettling experience. The game’s sanity mechanic adds another layer of tension. Witnessing horrifying events or staying in the dark for too long can cause Daniel’s sanity to deteriorate, leading to disturbing hallucinations and a blurred sense of reality.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a must-play classic that will leave even the bravest of players with lingering nightmares.

The game’s atmosphere is so immersive, and the night vision mechanic made my heart race every time I had to conserve my camcorder’s battery life while uncovering the asylum’s twisted secrets. The gritty visuals, chilling sound design, and intense pacing all come together to create an unforgettable horror experience that still haunts me to this day. The game offers a generational continuation of Ellen Ripley, the original protagonist in the 1979 movie: Alien.

What really blew my mind was the insanely smart Alien AI that adapts to how you play, making each encounter with the Xenomorph heart-stoppingly tense. With hardly any resources, you’ve got to rely on stealth and smarts to outwit the Alien and other hostile creatures.

The game’s atmosphere, jaw-dropping visuals, and perfect homage to the iconic franchise make it a standout in the horror genre. Seriously, if you’re an Alien fan or love horror games, you can’t miss out on the spine-chilling experience that is Alien: Isolation!
